Review: The Terminator is the sum of its GREAT GREAT parts

Since Terminator: Genisys is coming out, I figured I'd do an analysis of the Terminator.

Story:
The Terminator is about a machine that wants to stop a mother from delivering a child that lives through a tough life where he fights a war vs machines and goes to their military base nearly destroying them, prior to the machines sending a lone cyborg back in time to kill his mother, the main character of the story.

It's a sci fi classic story.
*****/*****

Style
This was such an interesting classic. It's a little beat over your head with the tech noir neon sign, in addition to having a story that's basically spelled out for you, but Sarah Connor as the femme fatale was a good choice. It may even be a reverse police story as there's no detectives and the police are obstacles in this story, which I may get to.
It's part sci fi. It's part romance. It's part chase film, a la the Driver or Smokey and the Bandit.
Watching Nick of WeLiveFilm's analysis of Back to the Future, I couldn't help but think of Terminator as well while watching it with chase scenes and time travel of the 80s before he mentioned it as well.

*****/*****

Action:
It's a little cheap at how the Terminator can't die or react other than with special effects when he's shot, but it's different.
It sorta reminds me of Chappie now where they just kill everybody no selling everything shooting up entire places.
The scene where he just runs the car through the police station is epic.
Suspense should be added to these scenes as there's a bit of terror as Sarah runs from the robot, afraid of how to destroy it, in every scene. Great job by Linda Hamilton!
*****/*****

Themes:
There's a fear of things different in this film.
Xenophobia,
Mechaphobia
Corporatephobia.

Fears of Nazis, Japanese, Russians, Cubans and other people making nuclear bombs to destroy you.
The fact that the Japanese economy in addition to the German were developing better steel factories were indicative of how relevant the end scene of the film was where the Terminator gets destroyed by another machine.
The idea of a corporation making nukes to make money that can destroy the world. The fact that there's. This sets up a lot of Paul Verehoeven's superior original classic RoboCop.

*****/*****

The acting:
Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese really should've been associated with the greats such as Martin Scorsese's Robert De Niro, Francis Ford Coppola's Al Pacino and Dustin Hoffman in general. One of the best portrayals ever as the military paranoid Kyle Reese, who seems to be this scary unlikeable guy, who you don't know anything about in the film prior to seeing him shoot the other dude, who is later revealed to be a cyborg assassin. Side note on how no one has to explain how slow the Terminators fight or walk/run.

And Sarah Connor goes from this character that Cyberdyne makes just like a Terminator machine, fake bland and suburban white trash perfect to pulling off cool lines such as "You're terminated, Motherfucker!" That's just great.

There's regretably not a lot for the police officers to do, but they seem just as concerned for saving Sarah as Reese, albeit they just don't believe in this fantastical story about futuristic robots trying to kill everyone.

*****/*****

Casting:
Everyone was good.
And Arnold really broke out as the Terminator, doing whatever he could to look the part, not to mention the accent.
He seemed to be an action movie star because of this unique film, despite the great performances everyone overlooks by the rest of the cast.

*****/*****

Overall, a very unique film. It's not the most realistic where you have the existence of time travel, the improper use of time travel, as the machines can't pinpoint where to find Sarah Connor, or don't target a better place in the timeline to kill off her or the John Connor line, and a Terminator robot surviving truck explosions. And maybe there's something Rob Ager can tell me about Robot AI that's not accurate, which doesn't have to be in a movie.

E3 2015: Halo and Gears of War

Halo: It feels cool that there's 24 players in multiplayer mode, but they didn't care about story, so why should I? Nothing else was really mentioned.

Gears of War, they showed nothing. Some monster. Didn't really look like the monsters from the first two games. Everything was too dark to see anything. (Microsoft didn't learn from First Person Shooters from 5 years ago.) Nothing too innovative, impressive or anything in this game.

List of complaints regarding Jurassic World

  1. The movie is pretty much summarized by the kid using the original Jurassic Park banner as a torch
  2. Test Tube Rex is smart according to the dialogue but not the audience
  3. Test Tube Rex is Takeshi Kitano Rex
  4. Test Tube Rex speaks Raptor
  5. Test Tube Rex should be killed because he is Frankenstein
  6. Test Tube Rex should be killed because he is Black Widow
  7. Taxi Driver
  8. The symbiote
  9. There's no main character
  10. There's no family connection like with Alan Grant or Ian Malcolm and kids
  11. The older brother is a hentai.
  12. There's no John Williams
  13. There's no arcs
  14. There's no characters
  15. Ron Howard's daughter plays someone with no character, and acts if she is just reading lines.
  16. She gets involved in the worst romance in movie history
  17. Star lord is introduced too late in the movie
  18. Star lords best friend bishop has unknown whereabouts at the end of the movie
  19. The death scenes are g rated garbage
  20. There's a bunch of references to the military that may be propaganda and if so have a point
  21. The illogical plot point of using raptors for military purposes goes wrong and not for the most rational reason
  22. The movie doesn't have an ending

Why Lost World is a good sequel to Jurassic Park

Instead of using Sam Neill, take Steven Spielberg’s place as the star of the film, it’s Jeff Goldblum as the Ian Malcolm character dealing with his kids, promoting him from his role in the first film.
Heck, he even has Julianne Moore taking place of Laura Dern in the first film as archaelogist girlfriend.
Kelly’s adventure is stowing away.
No one really cares that Ian Malcolm had an interracial relationship or sexually promiscious. Points that were brought up in the first film. Pretty progressive.
I guess the third film they should’ve had Hammond as the main character, which they can’t really do now unfortunately.

There Will Be Blood Review of who shouldn't watch the film and why

To make this boring, this film is not for everyone. It's long with a lot of silence, where it requires you to appreciate the cinematography and soundscapes to enjoy the film.
It's very artsy.
It's slow.
It's methodical.
It keeps you waiting to see what happens next in the film.
It's basically a drama about a rich man, his son and a egotistical self-loving priest who can make him rich.

The film deals with a right wing Christian group.
For those of you who don't believe they exist, or ever existed, if the idea of a group like this existing alienates you or is uncomprehensible to you, not to mention that you're a loyal Christian who believes Christians have never done wrong in the world,
THEN THIS FILM ISN'T FOR YOU.

If you're a capitalist, thinking that the only way to succeed is to gain more money, and that nothing immoral will happen cuz of it,
THEN THIS FILM ISN'T FOR YOU.

There's a rich asshole in the film.
There's a priest who basically thinks he's Jesus in the film.
The rich asshole kills the priest.

He's finished.
Then the film ends.

Criterion Sight and Sound Picks 2010

European:
Dutch:
The Passion of Joan D'Arc
It's interesting in that it pretty much feels like it
It's sort of like in a biographical style, but dramatized.
I'm personally not a fan, although fans really love these.
I prefer Ordet myself.
I do appreciate the creativity though.
Like this film was basically a home movie, yet made you believe in it being an on location set where Joan D'Arc actually died.
And then the epic finale.
It's almost non-auteurish as much as it was a popcorn film for me.
Pretty cool though.

Characters:
Do you really not the story of Joan D'arc?
Seriously though, how they pulled off the characters in silent European style drama really pulled off the film as a stand out.

French:
Au Hasard Balthasar, an interesting tale from the point of view of a donkey, in auteur style. So many things happen to the donkey, that it's sort of a biopic, humanizing him. It's like pre-Malick, pre-Weir, pre-Roeg. Really innovative for its time. Robert Bresson was a beast.
Breathless: It's sort of a French variation of a noir mixed with characters who are into film describing them in detail, classic Godard. I guess when they started hearing that dialogue, everybody went Seinfeld nuts, but this film wasn't really for it for me.
The Rules of the Game: Can't get anymore classical than this. Heavily inspired a lot of film and directors. The hunting scene is one of the most iconic of all time. French Revolution. Controversially for its time.

Italian:
8 1/2:
One of the prime examples of surrealism. And it's about directing a film, which is a film!
And you get to hear Italians argue!

I forgot L'atalante
Not like 70s acting, but really good, dramatic, even if unconvincing.
And let's not forget about the main star of the film: the cinematography. The landscapes really set up films such as Red Desert.

Really good.
Swedish:
Persona. The use of the double switch in actors was really influential not only in film, but in Broadway. Like Mulholland Drive, I still don't understand parts of this film, although I still don't think that the great Ingmar Bergman could've made this a little bit more coherent, not that that was the point.
Japanese:
Ozu:
Late Spring: a story of a father giving up his daughter to her husband.
Tokyo Story: a story of a daughter losing her family.
Both these film accomplish topics Ozu was great with: family. Ozu doesn't do moving shots.

Kurosawa:
Seven Samurai
This script is interesting in how it uses character development as plot structure.
The film begins in media res.
And consists mainly of introduction
Prior to an excellent conclusion. A samurai fight done by Kurosawa

Inductions into the Strong World Video Game Hall of Fame

The finalists are:
  • Pong,
  • Pac-Man,
  • Tetris,
  • Super Mario Bros.,
  • DOOM, and
  • World of Warcraft

They were selected from a field of 15 finalists that also included:
  • Angry Birds,
  • FIFA,
  • The Legend of Zelda,
  • Minecraft,
  • The Oregon Trail,
  • Pokémon,
  • The Sims,

I would've preferred Legend of Zelda, Oregon Trail, and Sonic the Hedgehog on that list.
At least no FIFA.

How Final Fantasy 13 should've ended

The Sorceress should've sent you back in time thanks to Ellone.

You fight Garland.

Vanille and Hope and all the annoying voice actors die attempting to save someone's life,
Anyone's life.
Doesn't matter.
Not important.
You defeat Garland.
He reveals that there's a world of 4 Fiends for the original 9 Final Fantasies in the next Final Fantasy.
It'll be 2d chibi overhead.

Final Fantasy VII is finally remade.
The draw system is taken out of Final Fantasy VIII.
The Excalibur II is easier to get in Final Fantasy IX without a Gameshark.
Chrono Trigger 2 is made.

Video Game Review: Final Fantasy V

Gameplay: Excellent
Let's start with gameplay: you heard from Stanburdman how much he praises the gameplay.
So much variety how you want to approach the game.

It was originally going to be adapted as Final Fantasy Extreme after Square skipped Final Fantasy II & III from Japan. I hear rumors on how they perceived the game as too complex for American fans resulting in the release of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.
There wouldn't be such a Final Fantasy 1 innovation till Final Fantasy Tactics. It's a missed art honoring the original game.
So many fighters and magicians.
It's sorta like playing as Megatron when he gets all the Decepticons' powers that one episode, or Kamen Rider Decade who has all the other. I guess a video game analogy would've been Mega Man gaining all the Robot Masters powers, but you get my point!

A

Story: Simple, but effective
Four Crystals.
Get an extra vehicle to get to a locked place.
Long lost evil was trapped. Long lost evil wants out.
Has Final Fantasy III Japanese-like secondary protagonists.
True sequel to Final Fantasy I, since Final Fantasy III.
No exceptions here. Exdeath is the fall of man and will destroy you unless you beat the game of course.

It's the original Fem Shep game with Lenna and Faris proving to as physical, less magical than previous female counterparts.

Amnesia is a theme allowing one to get immersed in the game discussing how the world works and getting to know the characters very well.
They used this in pretty much every Final Fantasy on the Super Nintendo and Playstation, but it's super effective like a fire pokemon against a leaf pokemon. (If you want to be super specific, without any special resistances of course, a conventional one!)

B

Character Design: A bit stereotypical yet still confusing
They really make it super obvious that Faris is a woman, thanks to codifying. Some weird jokes.
Galuf is also this really drunken master-ish character in the beginning as he duel strikes like a monk, and has a brown beard with tan clothes.
It would've been cool if he reappeared during Final Fantasy Tactics
Exdeath sorta reminded me of Hindel from Shining Force: Sword of Hajya on the battle screen.
It doesn't really stand out like an anime-ish Terra or a spiky hair Cloud Strife. Nothing really iconic unfortunately.

B

Music: I love the music.
Albeit some songs I can't remember as well or are my favorite.
Everybody seems to think Gilgamesh's theme sticks out the most. I can't disagree.
It's Nobuo Uematsu. Hopefully, he'll play at Distant World another time.
A-

Overall, really memorable game.
A great use of the job system with a great experience playing along with music. A lot of people love Sephiroth and Kefka. I have Exdeath as one of my favorite baddies. Consistently and unsuprisingly battled by him throughout while telling a story about a world.
It's a great game. Play it.
A-
