The 5th anniversary of Transforminators: Salvation

I really like the fx and the design
Everything's dirty and gritty way more than Blade Runner, although that wasn't the point of Blade Runner, and that manner was a bit more cinematic.

Kyle Reese is too young for us to care about him. Not quite Phantom Menace bad.
Christian Bale's good, but there's nothing interesting for John Connor to do than have him yell.
Sam Worthington's character is a bit of a disappointment, albeit his entire destiny is sort of having to do with fate or something.
Mrs. Connor doesn't really have anything to do.
And there's a hot native American who can kick butt.

It recycles and complicates the theme of a robot being sentient somewhat adding a time travel element with a dead man.

The element of a robot with a heart saving John Connors life was sorta ironic, but interesting. However, he was the main selling point of the film, so it was weird killing him off.
The characters aren't really iconic or classic
And from the T cycle that's way too simple to use and hack.

Furthermore, there's a lot of reasons that we don't get immersed in it like we do in the other Terminator films:

  • No anticorporate theme
  • No time travel
  • Very militaristic
  • The rape scene isn't done with class only to appeal to a teens perception of what's dark.

Muppet Christmas Carol criticisms: Michael Caine and the fantasy of Christmas

I really enjoy A Muppet Christmas Carol. I remember the songs like the back of my hand. The production designs are great compared to the more recent Muppet films that are basically just the Dark Knight set, which consists of exterior locations. (I didn't even notice that Michael Caine was in both when I wrote that observation!)
This growing up was my favorite Muppet media, besides Muppet Babies and the Muppet Show.
I was lucky enough to have bought it on VHS, which is still intact with the song "When Love is Gone." I bought the VHS at my local Pathmark, which is still around, with my brother or I sitting in the baby seat of the cart.

Anyways, there's two main problems with this film.
Michael, Caine.
He plays the character of Scrooge a bit too dark for a kid like me to enjoy it, noticeably when stating that he would not mind decreasing the surplus population when Beaker's friend states that people would rather die than live in the poor houses.
It also doesn't help that according to Wikipedia that Caine is a conservative having discussed topics such as
  • his disdain for increasing taxes on the rich (LIKE HIMSELF)
  • bringing young people back to conscription and public service
  • and discussing other people's pay such as benefits when being helped out by the government
Perhaps, when Dickens wrote the film, he imagined it as a bit of a parody of Robert Louis Stevenson's Jekyll and Hyde, where people magically turn into happy people during Christmas, an ultimately misunderstood aspect in the film, in amidst the themes of being rich, unhappy and/or selfish.

The 50th Anniversary of Masaki Kobayashi's Kwaidan

I've only watched a few Masaki Kobayashi films. One of them being Harakiri which inspired the 2000s film, very methodical, 60s Palme D'or acting based, all building up Hitchcock suspense and tension up to the seppuku.
The film is like watching four Draculas, four Wizard of Ozes. All four endings are great because of their abruptness.
(I'm sorry for basically making this a plot summary, but it's 60s Palme D'or. A little hard to get! XD So watch on Hulu, then come back.)
The film starts with a writer writing the 4 stories but in one timeline.
The husband wanting to live with his wife opposed to divorcing her. He loves her more than everything in the world, only to see her become the ghost of herself, a bag of bones, death, a doppleganger, so many things she isn’t. Theme of the conservative’s perception of family, love and marriage, obsession, addiction. Very similar to the works of Kaneto Shindo and the feminist ghost, haunting the chauvinist pig in a liberal world. Materialism and beauty opposed to actually getting to know a woman. The woman becomes a ghost, no longer a human, treated as a thing.
The next segment deals with a female ghost, who may have been the same one in the first segment haunting another man who is about to die in battle, cold, seeking warmth. She comforts him and gives him life from some sort of motherly-wifely mix but threatens to kill him if he mistreats a woman.
The third segment deals with a blind woman, and the men who mistreat her.
Feminine man. Multicolored Samurai. The shadows and editing effects making him look like a ghost. I debate it would’ve looked better if they had done a simpler less elaborate set up using only the shadows.
Water, mirrors, reflection and light are a key aspect of the film. The symbol of ghosts is represented through the cup of water, possibly also a reference to the ink of a pen.
There's a lot of good production valuie. A great wood red painting.
“I can imagine several possible endings. But none of them would satisfy your imagination. I would rather you decide for yourself.”
It’s quite a beautiful movie, with some of the most innovative writing and direction. It deserved the Palme D’or.

1999 in film: 5th Anniversary

1999 was an end for a lot of things.
It was the end of Microsoft and the end of the .com bubble.
It was the end of AOL and dial up modems.
It was the end of the critically acclaimed LucaArts. Some credit for the fall of the Cold War.
It was the end of the great American movie and in with blockbusters:
Film became about films that are supposedly Star Wars-like, but really a lot more hollow than how even that film was presented.
Now in 2010, we have a lot of films and television shows that resemble Lynch films how their actors
Many of the top films of this year have yet to be topped, not even close, as 30 films from the last 15 years have been really good, and maybe 5 were on par with films such as the Matrix.
X-Men, Spider-Man, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Kick-Ass and Marvel have led to the superhero boom, which was critically praised thanks to the cheap website costs of the late 2000s, I call the WordPress/Adsense Effect.
More on these topics later.

VGBS: Metal Mario vs Metal Sonic

Metal Mario I don't really like because he's a very lazy, yet shiny swap. Although somewhat annoying, the mode for Super Mario 64 has killer music and sound effects.
Metal Sonic looks a lot more aesthetically pleasing however, as there was a lot more craftsmanship creating the design.

Both modes pale compared to its predecessors the Star(man) and the invincibility spark, which allow both characters to not only go fast but jump, not to mention the awesome music.
Kamehameha Mario indeed.

Advanced Warfare is a completely new Call of Duty

You can play multiplayer
It's in the first person view.
It's a first person shooter.
It's all in camoflague colors.
You have guns and grenades.
You can switch between weapons.
There are terrorists that you have to kill.
You can still deface and teabag women in the game.

It's the same fucking game!

NYCC 2014: Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris is a great multiplayer game along the lines of Little Big Planet

I love this game. I think this game has a lot of potential, especially if they keep the multiple respawns like they did in the press demo Square-Enix had.
There's a great battle that has to do with Egyptian gods. Lara Croft and her Egyptian friends have to save the day, in a tale of great mythology.

The puzzles are simple, but there's a lot of fun to be had with friends.
Example puzzles are figuring out how to defeat a seemingly invulnerable gatekeeper or a rock that can break, but infinitely respawn.

There's not really a lot of requirement for expository tutorials as to how to get past points in the game, giving Temple of Osiris a bit of an old school approach to it.
And it's designed well. Maybe because I'm older, but I found it very simple to get through the stages without the help of a walkthrough or the Public Relations person guiding us through the game.

The controls are simple to master.
There's a ton of occasions where friends (real life or in game) enjoy extending ropes to their friends, only to screw up letting their friends get to the other side the last second, a la the Joker in Alan Moore's Killing Joke.
Some weapons you share with your allies. Some you don't, making choices interesting for both player and developer.

Video Games I'm Looking Most Forward to in November 2014

Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor: There's still more movies of the Hobbit? That book was from like 1950. It's not like it was friggin A Clockwork Orange or One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest or something!
Sonic Boom: The story will probably be lackluster. This was a final Nintendo game. Gameplay shouldn't be too bad though.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare: First new engine since friggin Call of Duty 2, Transformers/Deadpool team, still about fucking terrorists.
Lego Batman 3: Lego f'n Batman
Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: Reboot
Smash Bros Wii U: 8 players really brings on the Wii.
Little Big Planet 3: I'm really curious as to what the other characters do.
Digimon: All-Star Rumble, as I stated in my previous article, I'm not expecting anything spectacular, but hopefully it'll introduce the anime fans to the games, in an oversaturated Pokemon market.
Persona Q aka Persona 3 x 4.
Dragon Age: Inquisition: A game beyond gender, but within fantasy

Star Wars Rebels Season 1, Episode 4, "Breaking Ranks" had very interesting military-industrial complex themes

Summary: During the episode, the protagonist is stuck inside of an Imperial military school, where he is forced to follow an Imperial regiment without blowing his cover.
It's very interesting how safe the look of Star Wars: Rebels is, and how sinister it really looks as a result in comparison to the last two episodes of the prequel trilogy. If you look unprofessional, unwealthy, mentally flawed in both health and IQ, there's not much one would do to try and join an empire. However, being clean and sort of this futuristic military crew opposed to the poor neighborhoods of Tatooine, I can definitely see the appeal of the empire to many.
I'm not sure what kind of empire inspired this kind of setting, but the creators played around with it this episode, and it was really interesting!
The direction of the actors was very interesting as well.
Every character is child-like and sympathetic, adding a bit more of a sinister mist to the show, as the characters attempt to figure out who the Inquistor is, and his importance to the canon. There's no doubt the effects he has in this episode, and the franchise.
I really like the character that buys into the Imperial propaganda that the Imperial Inquistor will provide the cadets a good life, when they really become soldiers and killers. It balances the good side with the dark side and hopefully they'll be able to use his character well in later episodes!

Paul Thomas Anderson Season: Revisiting the Master in 2014: Is the Master Lynchian?

This is more of an abstract than an essay so be prepared to be annoyed by the end of the sentences.

Also, noticeable in this film, is the theme of love and sex with both the characters' being dependent upon their love, which is fulfilled in the trilogy's Punch-Drunk Love.

They both end with a loved one singing to them.

Freddie's quest is essentially for love much like the rest of Paul Thomas Anderson's films. He is seeking from Dodd a possibility to go back and find his long lost love who has moved on from him a la The Tale of Princess Kaguya.

Dreams: He meets woman remind him of his long lost love after becoming drunk after getting fired after a fight with a man who looks a lot like Dodd.

He gets on a boat to get away from her. And even further with Dodd.

It's a bit Lynchian in approach with its dream-like logic. It even has the blonde from Blue Velvet.

I still feel the role of Mrs. Dodd was done a bit too obviously. Then again, it could be a sort of red herring for what her role really is as I discuss a little later on.

Paul Thomas Anderson Season: Revisiting the Master in 2014: The Quill-Dodd Relationship

Famed internet critic, Darren Foley notes the doppelgangers and psychological aspects of the film.
Despite my previous encounter with cults in Fight Club and Martha Marcy May Marlene in 2011, I hadn't noticed the dark side of the religion in the film. The sort of brainwashing in this film that people seem to agree with that many right wingers may not have picked upon in There Will Be Blood.
The acting, the directing, the script, the research and the performances are really tested.

I gave Robert De Niro the Best Supporting Actor award in 2012, because he played a very over the top and dark character with some humor and even some empathy in Silver Linings Playbook. He's always a great actor, and I felt that would be an underrated role for him so I gave him the award.
However, with my sudden revelation of how dark and more complex yet sympathetic Lancaster Dodd's character in the Master is

Freddie Quill doesn't have much going for him and there doesn't need to be. He's a violent stupid militaristic backward fist full of cuffs fighter that we can't but feel empathy for, no matter how selfish he is. I don't feel the impact of his character like with Nagisa Oshima's Cruel Story of Youth, because he's so much more relatable, not to mention it being an American story and I, being an American.

Noticeable is the contrast between these two characters in a time when Napoleonic division between poor and wealthy is present in our world.

Nightmare on Elm Street: Freddy's Revenge: The homosexual references

You can debate whether the film was exploiting people's fears, but Freddy’s Revenge is a classic in subtext, much like that of Stanley Kubrick's Lolita.
The first notable example is the hot woman he ignores on the bus that dies in the first flashback.
Jesse’s very concerned with his body and water, heat and fire are the main focus of the episode.
Baseball could be associated with homosexuality, especially with peni and balls. No chicks.
He owns a woman’s diary. A ghost story. Seeing everything but his nipples covered when he's wrapped by the blanket. There's a torn picture of a woman in the basement. Gardening tools, and long nails signifying the feminine side of Freddy. Maybe ho.
He’s not having sex with the girl.
The other guy, Grady looks like a homosexual militaristic right wing rapist how he just takes off his pants in the middle of a baseball game.
Her friend ignores him as a cute guy.
His shirt’s like a skirt in one scene.
The issues that the parents want him to see a psychiatrist. Methodone clinic.
And of course, naked coach in a shower, before receiving a whupping.. Teacher S&M Prison Sports Analysis of the One of my favorite kill so far in the first two films is when Jesse murdering Grady scene: It’s really awesome. Freddie and Jesse become one. It’s a scene where there was a lot of sex, implying that’s the reason why he killed Grady. Skeletons, etc.. To me that's like one of the scenes where Daniel Plainview and Eli Sunday yell at each other. It's just great!

Top 5 Media (TV Show/Movies) I would love to see the Simpsons tackle

In the golden age of comedy, sitcoms would make current day references to either real life current events, topics that worried parents who may have been concerned with their children watching the Simpsons in addition to television shows or movies that were popular at the time.
I feel that the last decade of Simpsons, this wasn't as relevant outside of Treehouse of Horror, so I decided to come up with a list.

What I enjoyed about the Godzilla 2014 protagonist: Part 1

He's not an anti government military man or 70s Vietnam ripoff
He's not right wing war mongerer or politician.
He's a human being.
He does what's best for humanity in a tough situation where he would probably prefer revenge.
Maybe he'd be a little boring in another setting, but he's just the type of hero America needs now. Someone apolitical, while trying to do what's best, while not using propaganda.

Digimon All-Star Rumble Preview

The game looks like Smash Brothers with three dimensions.
However, it isn't Smash Brothers. The gameplay needs some tweeking to really get the amount of game psychology, depth, taunting and fun to match that type of gameplay. As Playstation All-Stars (coincidence or not?) has noticed, it's hard to compete with Nintendo in not only brand and history, but also gameplay when it comes to coming up with a good game.
What I would've done was kept Digimon Bros similar to Melee, for all the Brawl detractors. You'd get a really dedicated fanbase

However, it really looked like they were trying to outbrawl Brawl. Not only with three dimensions and better graphics, but especially the Digievolve Final Smashes.
While not invincible, you're unstoppable.
There's a cool anime-ish cutscene, everytime it happens.
Not to mention, as the marketing exec notes, the strength of the Digimon Digivolve gimmick and brand marketing with that segment.

Will wikipedia stop analyzing female video game characters based on how attractive they are?

Synopsis:
Boring shit nobody reads.

_ was listed as the top 1,000,000 sexiest video game characters of all time.

And no body takes wikipedia seriously?

What makes these characters interesting as woman, as humans and as characters? Their struggles, their strengths, their voice actor/actresses' performances, etc.. What makes them unique and memorable?

Final Fantasy wise:
Tifa and the Lara Croft comparisons don't have anything to do with her relationship with Cloud and how it progresses the story, good/bad.
Rinoa's neck fat has nothing to do with how her character plays, and how interesting or unimportant (seemingly) her romance with Squall is.

Shenmue Review

Shenmue is a tale of revenge.
Main story is a detective story
A fighting game
An adventure game
An RPG
A game with many layers

You follow Ryo Hazuki, a man who witnesses his father's death before him at the beginning of the game, before unlocking clues as to who the murderer, (Lan Di), your father, and even yourself are.
It takes place in Yokosuka, a melting pot in Japan, where audiences discover the dual cultural identity of the city. It's very realistic, if not real and immersive and very fascinating for those of us, who've never been to Japan, especially that area.

I wish some of the characters had more to say, but the production giving you the choice to talk with everyone was an interesting idea.

Your favorite video games become his, your favorite music in the game becomes his, making you empathize with him, a very powerful form of the narrative.

The game sort of played like Chrono Trigger in that you could skip around like crazy to get to the final part of the game.
It was really like what I wanted from a Phoenix Wright game, considering how linear and game mechanic driven rather than actually detective driven that game was, taking me out of that game whenever I had to

You never knew what kind of weather you would receive on each day prior to making the weather exactly like 1986.

Around the time of Super Mario 64, you could use the first person perspective to observe anything you wanted, a virtual reality experience a movie could not give or interact with a human being with. You could examine objects to progress through the game, something LA Noire as great as it is, just doesn't do as well 10 years later.

There's a feed the kitty mini game in the game.
It was a great video game experience.

Even the supposedly odd voice acting worked, helping give the game an iconic memorable status as a video game classic.

Next month's plans: NYCC Month 2014

I'll be really busy for New York Comic Con Month
Several of the following have previews at the con:

Image
Harry Potter
LOTR
Lego Batman 3 is coming out.
Batman and Marvel plan on celebrating their 75th Anniversary, even if I may not.

The Dare Devil movie sucked because Ben Affleck was getting sucked off by Jennifer Lopez and Katie Holmes in a Scientology The Master billy club three way.
Seriously though, it's not that great, but it didn't deserve the bashing it got.
I still think the Electra/Dare Devil sequence is funny but well intended.

The Incredibles
Disney Theme Park movies

I definitely plan on doing a best of Green Ranger episodes.
A best Green Ranger/White Ranger/Tommy episodes list is long overdue and he'll be at New York Comic Con, where he'll be too busy signing autographs to interview. Sure, everybody else would enjoy him at the con. No Dino Charge news either..

Star Trek really channels the child in me, and the technical jargon's great, but the direction and writing haven't been too classy.

Somebody might want to be Firefly. I doubt I will.

Dr. Who I might cover Matt Smith if I have the time to watch all the episodes.

Final Fantasy VIII Month: Final Fantasy 1 should be remastered using time elements

Square-Enix remastered a B-class RPG known as Lufia in 2008, completely revamping the game. They did it again with 3, according to rumors that they lost the code. Everybody wants a Final Fantasy 7 revamp, from fans and detractors of the series. The detractors mainly complaining that it's too easy, not just having fun with the customability, i.e. combining 20 materia to max out your strength stat in a 8x cut with a character against Ruby weapon.

Combining elements from Final Fantasy 8 and Chrono Trigger, really play around with the time aspect that deals with Garland, the Four Fiends and Chaos.
Have optional unlockable characters.
Have unlockable summons.
The amazing thing about Final Fantasy, is that they never did an homage to Fighter and Black Belt, the characters that are fun to use, since they don't require a magic point to do a lot of damage.
Multiple hits from characters are rare in a Final Fantasy game, but boy does everybody like to tank up.
Remastering 1 would be a step in giving Fighter and Black Belt key respect that they gave to the franchise.

You can even do an homage to Ocarina of Time by having
Fighter, Black Belt, Thief, White Mage, Black Mage and Red Mage
team with:
Master, Ninja, White Wizard, Black Wizard and Red Wizard
against Garland and the Four Fiends
and Chaos
with two sets of villains on the heroes' planet.
Final Fantasy did have a trope, where they had separate enemy sets on planets.

Transformers 4: What I heard about it sucking less

Bad:
They use an old formula that's terrible and they still can't pull off:
Use technobabble exposition on a time and place that is relatable that audiences are aware of but in reality has nothing to do with the story.
Have more evil corporate cartoon humans
Still not have it in space
Steal from Prometheus

Happy Anniversary Final Fantasy 8

Final Fantasy 8 isn't my favorite Final Fantasy, but I definitely appreciate the game.
The creation of Esthar has a unique take on the World's Fair Jetsonian future feel, except done Squaresoft/Tetsuya Nomura style.
You uniquely didn't have a Cait Sith or Red XIII character in the game.
The amount of production value that was put into the card game, making it so that basically every character no matter how random had the option of playing you in the card game.
The vocals are few, but memorable.
The multiple interpretations of the ending and misinterpretation of the plot is very amusing.
It's not as epic as 6 or 7, but still quite memorable and hella fun to play.

Happy Anniversary Dreamcast

I have fond memories of the Dreamcast.
I first borrowed one playing Spider-Man and Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.
I got it on a $50 Toys R Us deal when the console was really worth $30, buying Jet Set/Grind Radio, Crazy Taxi 2, Power Stone 2 and missing out on Evolution 2.
I would eventually buy Shenmue, one of the crowning achievements in my video game collection.

The console was created at a time of high Sega zealousy as seen with the Shenmue fans. Great memories indeed.

FF8 and Dreams: Part 1

There's quite an extensive study on dreams particularly by Sigmund Freud by the 1900s.
Dreams have been much the subject of not just video games, but by the greatest filmmakers and auteurs of the last century including Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch. Lynch's most famous and well known example of this is Mulholland Drive, a film about the loss of the American Dream through Hollywood, where many surreal things happen, such as the main character, Rita, having a dream in the beginning while hiding from a car chase.
While that obvious example, happened two years after Final Fantasy 8 was released, dreams have been observed by many like Sigmund Freud and Fritz Perls since late 1800s, and many such as yourselves have observed what happens in ones own dreams, possibly in iCloud's or Facebook chats, or even old fashioned word processors, printed paper notebooks and notepads.
Media related, noted internet film critic Rob Ager has noted how Alex mentions in A Clockwork Orange as if someone had screwed up his brain in a dream, in a Wizard of Oz-like scenario. Similarly child abused character Danny Torrence, has a dream regarding a nightmare in a hotel room, according to one of Ager's interpretations.
Culturally, there's been a lot of bologna, but the fascination, obsession and idea of one is definitely something intriguing. Nowadays, the American dream is one highly sought of, but scarce: becoming rich in a Xanadu-like mansion with all ones loved ones. Being able to buy everything you want, becoming a house owner, doing a job you enjoy, etc.. It's really about the person. What does one desire or want to achieve in life?
(In this example,) what about Cloud Strife?

The positives of the Lego Movie

The Lego Movie has very creative ideas.
It's a teamup film with cameos from Star Wars, Batman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, not to mention product placement.
It has creative use of animation that bring out the child within oneself, really conveying ideas such as vehicle repair, and vehicle reconstruction mid animation by characters. It has an American variation of an anime feel to it. It is a demonstration of ones capabilities and creativity.
It has adults themes of creationism with man as its own God with the Master Builders, forming a sort of modernist corporate religion, while also establishing Control vs Creativitiy themes. Remember, business is conservative and art is liberal.

The Final Fantasy 6, 7, 8 Trilogy

Final Fantasy 6-8 form a trilogy regarding their main characters themes, if you consider Terra the main character of Final Fantasy 6, another debate for another time.
Terra is a half Esper, mind controlled by the Emperor's slave crown placed by Kefka, before becoming a part of the Returners.
Cloud Strife is a part of a project of SOLDIER, mind controlled by Shin-Ra propaganda into fights against Shin-Ra's enemies, as evident in opening scenes where Cloud Strife discusses his childhood desire to become a man by taking another (creature's) life. His Buster Sword is a large iconic phallic symbol representing this. He has a great knowledge of materia based on his experiences and develops a connection with a girl named Aeris, who is an Ancient, having great magical properties, much like Terra's half Esper ancestry.
Squall Leonheart lives in a school, where he is trained to become the top of the class, much like in the Neon Genesis Evangelion scenario. SEEDs are ranked based on certain assignments, including written exams. They are trained to fight throughout the world, thanks to Cid's war propaganda, where he plays both sides of Esthar, Galbadia and Balamb. From obscure reasons, Squall loses his memories, much like Cloud and Terra, travelling the world to discover them.
It's a different spin on a bit of an anti-monomyth story, despite references in the beginning of Final Fantasy 6, where Star Wars references Biggs and Wedge and bad guys, before the end of Final Fantasy 8, where Biggs and Wedge become good guys.

The beginning of the Lego Movie is the Batman and Robin of 2014

I grew up in the 90s, when Batman and Robin and The Super Mario Bros movie were dismissed.
Batman and Robin had a lot of plant and ice puns. Super Mario Bros had a lot of plumber puns.
But they were puns!
The beginning of the Lego movie is really bullshitty, isn't funny and really brings down what could've been a five star film.
"It's supposed to be for kids though."
Then why'd they make a reference to an R-rated Terminator 2 movie from 1991 in TWO THOUSAND FOURTEEN?!
Not to mention the strength of the Lego brand, particularly Legoland with FAMILIES.

25th Anniversary: Super Mario Land

Pros:
Super Mario Land was a great addition to the Game Boy's legacy. It gave fans the experience to play a Super Mario Bros-like game on a handheld. The green and brown give it a bit of a film feel.

Daisy

The levels are shorter, but it really wasn't like fans played Super Mario Bros for length. Speed, walkthroughs, etc..

It was not as well known as Super Mario Bros 3.

Sure it seemed like unsupervised Mario Bros but it represented their popularity somewhere else, strengthening the brand.

Cons:
The first stage looked really looked cheap. It has nothing to do with the black and green graphics. Even the first stage you have to be a little creative picturing how the koopa turns into a rock and flying things turn into bird skeletons. Super Mario Bros was surreal, but Super Mario Land was even more surreal. Maybe even Adam Sandler-like in terms of how the creation began.

And that stage didn't really build up much of a rhythm then. It wasn't as much of a sound masterpiece as the Super Mario Bros games, where they had koopa shells knocking around everywhere.

But again, it's a bit of a pilot game. The game was short, but still has such fun and memorable levels. So don't blame 'em.

Financing: it was a success, and the ends justified the means. It didn't sell 40+ million like Super Mario Bros did, but it sold 18 million and got video games back into an industry again. Not to mention, its excellent, excellent Super Mario Land and Wario Land games starting with having Wario in Super Mario Land 2, making it a bit of a Dark Knight-ish sequel.

FF1

Final Fantasy 1 has a dear place in my heart. I actually owned an NES, but not a SNES, so Final Fantasy had a huge gap in my life prior to playing VII on my cousin's console and finally owning a piece when I bought the PS Final Fantasies after owning a PS2. I played 2-6 on emulator, completely not supporting Squaresoft's fine works, leaving a huge dent in art of society!
Back to Final Fantasy, what really got me into the franchise was this advertisement poster for a bunch of NES games. It came with a Nintendo game that I don't remember. Maybe it was the box for the Nintendo even. But anyway, I was just blown away by the graphics for the Fighter, who still hasn't had a modern Final Fantasy equivalent. (Chrono from Chrono Trigger may count!) The Black Mage was cool too. I don't think anybody knew what the Thief was for except for running.
It came with a walkthrough getting up to the airship.
I never got anywhere close to that thanks to my bullshitting of how to save the game in Square's completely convoluted manner of doing so.
It was my first instance of enjoying Final Fantasy music, and I enjoyed it so!
The bestiary had great design, albeit it would improve to be less pixelated over time.
The ineffectives became sort of this early hipsterish skill for me. It annoyed some, but I enjoyed the challenge of memorizing hps to recall how many hits it took to take out each enemy. This was before your sense materias screwing all that skill up. I remembered the exact amounts and was proud of that fact. (My pride is gone now though, alas!)
I got upset at the Dawn of Souls version for the run function and everything else that makes the game super broken without trying. The constant leveling up with part of the challenge of the game, a sense of patience, a sense of creativity from limitations, a sense of respect earned from playing such a different game in the US.
I dunno how great the plot twist was, but at least they friggin had one. It didn't annoy me nearly as much as Heavy Rain's.
So yeah. Great times with that game that I took like an entire generation to beat.

Why I wasn't pleased with this year's E3: Part 1

Nintendo is doing brand marketing again. As a job, brand marketing is great. You can do a lot of creative stuff with it.
Mario did a lot of creative stuff such as turning Donkey Kong into
  • Super Mario Bros
  • Super Mario Bros 3,
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • Super Mario 64
  • Donkey Kong 64
  • Super Mario RPG
  • Mario & Luigi
  • Paper Mario
  • Super Mario Land into Wario Land
Heck, they revived the entire industry after the video game crash of the 80s. They led prior to the creation of the Playstation. That's quite an achievement.

However, now that they're in the lead again, I'm just not getting the same high off their games.
Like when the Advance and the DS came out, there was Phoenix Wright, Elite Beat Agents and all these different types of games for that system.
With the Wii, we had Okami and other nunchaku supported games.

I suppose I should be glad that the Wii U revived the Star Fox series, but I dunno if so many interesting things will happen from it, not to mention recent releases of Star Fox failing, even though Nintendo quality of games is pretty good!

I mean, we have to be realistic though:
Blockbusters = 5 year production cycles = Less moneys for company employees who are probably going to be laid off by the time of the next project.

However, that doesn't mean we can't support video games as something beyond commercial art.

First Half 2014 Updates

There are 3 films I am considering moving into my top 10 films of all time after finally (re)viewing them this year:
  • The Shining (where I highly recommend a buy of the Rob Ager/Collative Learning DVD)
  • Hoop Dreams, a film that affected people much like those in the Golden Age of Hollywood did with the indie hit, Citizen Kane. It deserves all the hype over films such as the Three Colors Trilogy and Pulp Fiction.
  • Ghostbusters, something I've been working heavily on the 30th Anniversary of Ghostbusters review, but there's just a lot of notes to go through that I'm unable to make cohesive. If worse comes to worse, I'll just release them in separate chapters to help the flow of the notes.
I also watched the new RoboCop film. There's very little wrong with it. No plotholes. Nothing that raises and eyebrow, but it didn't really effect my brain like the original one did. None of the sequels/reboots have, which is a shame.
The political intrigue is interesting.
If they had made the film more about Samuel L. Jackson's character, it would've been a lot more interesting, albeit controversial. Luckily, they've tested it out and notably nobody raised an eyebrow to the film, so they can more likely go all out next film.
Joel Kinnaman has an interesting robotic voice.
The film is more post-9/11, more Blade Runner-ish.

Bleach DS: Blade of Fate Review

I like this game.
Simple controls.
Decent story.
Not great.
Love use of Dual Screen power ups. How they should be used prior to the Street Fighter IV, tap special moves.
Doesn't have a great number of cutscenes to enhance the production value or story, but gets its goal across.
Like Bleach, the characters have great character design.
It's sorta retconned though and you probably have to learn moves that have nothing to do with what they did in the show.

It takes a while to beat the game. If you enjoy fighting great.
But if you can't wait to get to the story, it'll definitely be a bit of a hassle for you.

7/10

Pretty Sailor Moon S (SNES)

This game is awful.

Pros:
The characters look like the characters on the show.

Cons:
Terrible hit detection that makes Karate Champ look like a masterpiece.
Impossible to use moves.
Terrible framerates.
Slow matches that rarely finish.
Really difficult to play, especially without an instruction manual.

The S for this game probably stands for Shaq FU.

Transformers Dark of the Moon: 3 Reasons Why It Sucks

  1. What's the point of the Ark/Dark (Side) of the Moon subplot? JFK is used to make it seem more real, but doesn't add much either.
  2. Shia can't find a job: It's his last film.
  3. Sentinel Prime becomes a bad guy to save the world that really makes no sense and makes traitors look unempathetic.
  4. Michael Bay's writers steal a plot from the worst written episode of Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad, (the kidnapping watch)
  5. Fox News product placement
  6. Apple product placement
  7. Grey's Anatomy guy used as a bad guy.
  8. The JJ Abrams use of Transformers references that only make sense if you somehow follow Transformers and don't know what they mean simultaneously.
  9. Sam Witwicky is fucking Batman and somehow kills Starscream. Does he come back? We don't give a shit by this time in the show.
  10. Death with bones poorly designed for concept art sketches.

Transformers 3: fuck community fans

You guys are probably the reason why JJ Abrams had a job.
There's nothing amusing about community as it only enhances stereotypes about an industry that is dying due to its inability to find Americans jobs and ruin our economy with its terrible stereotypes of the college fantasy frat life glory.
There was probably a time like in the social network where media portrayed it as conspiracies and dehumanizations of man with illuminati themes, but that seems to no longer be the case anymore.
It's 2008  where employment was severely down post college. We couldn't pay for houses, we couldn't any for tuition but u went and spent hundreds of dollars on food and ticket for this shorty movie anyway going hey that zany "funny" Asian guy is there
Well this is an f for you fucking college drop out so fuck you!

Transformers 3: fuck ken Jeong

I don't know if this was the worst thing in transformers 3 but as an Asian American it sure as he'll stood out to me. In the words of Daniel cud more in the 2014 eternalcon q and a, Ken Jeong sold his soul to become famous. He's not doing anything artistic or even witty. He caters to a fan base who doesn't understand Asian Americans and more importantly writers and directors o know what the fuck they're doing. How the hell can this film reach a billion when shotaro ishinompris lessons about the dark side of humanity have been overlooked is beyond me. Ken doesn't play a realistic crazy or ignorant Asian man. He doesn't play a stereotype. He plays an awkward type that influences media on so many levels while not even being an a lister.
So fuck you for not ruining Asian Americans in media, fuck you for not only ruining the transformers in general but fuck you for ruining media

Why transformers is a successful franchise of blockbusters

Transformers is a classic like that of stanley kubricks 2001 which requires multiple viewings. There's the scene of sex war and incest especially when Shia lebeoufs parents ask him if he was masturbating. Hot motor girl and an Everyman dealing with the hero's journey back to the future dilemmas of reaganist suburban high school life.
Appearances on Conan
War propaganda commercializations opposite evangelism which coincidentally Michael bay also wants to remake.
The human story is thin. We even get parents dealing with a masturbation joke.
Jon voight
Jon tuturro also underused with an annoying character albeit not that terrible.

The plot and characters are low class, but they make sense unlike recent films coming out

It appealed to the Christopher Nolan audience that wanted a more "adult" yet commercial unchallenging way.

There is a lot of production value put in the transformers albeit post lotr you hoped they could do better. There's not a great us of soundstages. But there is no doubt the effort put in thetransformation sequences making you ponder what can be done with iron man, and power rangers, making seemingly impossible transitions occur on screen. It even gives it a bit of an invasion of the body snatchers feel with the alien communist fears in play for the wrong reasons.
It really could've been a commentary on the horrors of war especially with Leonard nimoys character and globalization and the future after Michael bay's work on the island, but alas no.

Remember people like mediocre scripts, heavily marketed films.

30th Anniversary: Ghostbusters: Religion

Christian vs Sumerian religion
"Don't look at it!" Ray tells Egon.
"I looked at it" Egon admits.
The Trap is similar to that of the Ark of the Covenant, previously used 3 years ago.
Again, in Venkman's first scene, there is a door with his name on it graffitied, "VENKMAN GO TO HELL." Was this truly a sign from a hated student, or the devil himself? Possibly Christian. Possibly SUMERIAN?!
Gozer, a Sumerian god is present in a refridgerator, while the Ghostbusters drive a Funeral car.
Dana lives in a world, Reagan or not, where she does not know anything about Sumeria. Maybe it's an athiest world they live in that doesn't believe in religion or ghosts.
However, the mayor does ask a Catholic priest information regarding the explosions in NYC in addition to Winston and Ray discussing the end of the world according to the Bible.
Furthermore, it was mentioned that people in the 1920s committed unnecessary and mad surgeries in this universe.
Controversially, there are also mentions of pseudosciences opposed to religion.
Furthermore, nuclear weapons are factored in this universe with the proton packs.
Meanwhile, I'm getting a visit from the NSA regarding looking up Ghostbusters and skyscraper explosions at the end of the film.

30th Anniversary Ghostbusters: Statues

Statues are significant because that is the four legged like beings the Keymaster and the Gatekeeper turn into when they meet.
However, they are also prominently featured throughout the film thanks to the cinematography of the famed Laszlo Kovacs, a cinematographer from the American New Hollywood.
The statues in the initial shot of the library.
The statues of the second shot outside Venkman's workplace.
As well as one in Central Park, oddly enough right before Louis Tully is attacked by Vinz.
They could also be representing inanimate objects resembling animate objects, such as ghosts.

The 30th Anniversary: What does the New York Public Library and College represent in Ghostbusters?

The New York Public Library and college are significant symbols in the show.
It's the first place where the audience and Ghostbusters hear of a ghost, despite not actually capturing it in the film.
Furthermore, several books of history's meaning could be hidden from audiences due to the blurriness of the shot.
The film is an ancient story like that of Zuul and Gozer, so you figure it would've taken in some place more modern like a theatre.
However, there is no doubt that fiction is represented in the film as cards fly from library drawers and ghosts appear as well as the symbol of a quiet controlled environment, such as science and the library vs the chaotic environment of nature and the ghosts.
These were a symbol of intelligence that the Ghostbusters later fully realize.
Furthermore, ZUUL and Vinz are represented through quadraped statue shapes, much like that of the library's statues.
The ghosts are a story, possibly nothing more.

What to research when critiquing Ghostbusters

A very interesting aspect of the film was how the characters were able to express knowledge of several other histories of paranormal activity. It was a bit Star Trek-like, but also made them seem a bit more intelligent despite being in a pseudo science.
There's no Gozer or ZUUL in Babylonian history.
Yet movie magic happens and you believe it happened no different when the wrong guy invades China in Mulan.
New York is interesting because of its colonial history and Manhattan's Greek free mason architecture, which is a key factor in Stanley Kubrick films, such as the Shining, another film about the paranormal. Not to mention the fact that it is a major trade city.

The 30th Anniversary: Ghostbusters' homages to other films

  • Poltergeist, the techniques used to move objects invisibly in the library.
  • Blade Runner, with the psychic interrogation that can possibly result in somebody's death
  • Alien, with the references to child birth trauma.
  • The Shining, the hotel not to mention the ballroom were clear references
  • E.T., Zuul and Vinz kissing, like the girl and Elliot to Gone with the Wind
  • Vertigo, and probably the most famous Hitchcockian staircase

Street Fighter Alpha: The Movie: Intro

They made Street Fighter films too real, which still ended up with a campy M. Bison, whereas as ridiculous the Jackie Chan moment was, at least you got to see a guy do these absolutely ridiculous moves that made Mortal Kombat fun. Meanwhile, Legend of Chun-Li attempted to do that, to no effect, given how dark the story was, with its gore.

A lot of people love Street Fighter II: The Movie more than they like Street Fighter Alpha. I don't get why.
Alpha's animation is better.
The dark Hadou and and even the Super Hadoken are way awesome, albeit its been a 5 year upgrade, probably at the golden age of anime, after those of Perfect Blue, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop.
Its story is better and I could actually remember it!
I guess it didn't have a Chun Li nude shower scene though!
(I suppose that element did have elements of Psycho to it then again.)
I guess I'll stop here before

I rant. If anybody has a really good Street Fighter II review, please send it to me and we will compare
I watched Street Fighter Alpha: The Movie at my peak in college anime years about 5 years after it came out.
Napster and Kazaa were growing. Akira, Street Fighter Alpha: The Movie, Spriggun seemed to be the biggest internet hits in the pseudo US Revolution against Pokémon and Yugioh.

Fittingly enough, the main super villain for the Street Fighter Alpha movie is an Akira-inspired villain over 10 years after it came out.
The characters have Evangelion-ish eyes. It wasn't as ultra real as Rurouni Kenshin: Betrayal & Trust: The OAV, but it was hella good.

Mortal Kombat movie: The set pros and the script cons

It's a pretty conservative film without a lot of risks or notables from the game, besides brand marketing. Quite mild deaths compared to the game and its martial arts inspirations, albeit it probably made the game cheaper.

The set design is absolutely PHENOMENAL though.
You're in a Enter the Dragon-like tournament and island, especially when Liu Kang uses the stick to fight the unnamed man.
The forest Johnny Cage fights Scorpion in is cinematic and photographic, like that of a fairy tale, or in a video game, like Final Fantasy VII's Sleeping Forest.
Sub Zero's gives you chills.
The Reptile stage is like that on Notre Dame.
Goro's is an Earth-like rocky craggy stage, signifying his strength.
And of course, the epic Shang Tsung stage with the spikes.
Not to mention the place with the platforms and the multiple deaths.

Way more video game-ish than Street Fighter.

Campy, with special effects narrators going "OOPSY!" in a high pitched voice, Mortal Kombat was a game with a lot of replay value that kept players going. A Pandora's box of video game design and achievement placement.

I felt that the entire fears and egos things never goes anywhere, unless Raiden was trying to trick them. Not to mention that Sonya already defeated Kano by the time this happens in the film, only to play a stereotypical damsel in distress against Shang Tsung, something not even Street Fighter did in their film!
Also I don't find Cage particularly funny. Then again, maybe they were supposed to portray him as a loser in the group. The Hollywood member.

Mortal Kombat and the movie's connection to Bruce Lee and Bond

1 year after the death of Brandon Lee, the son of Bruce Lee, Liu Kang's inspiration. Robin Shou represented an Asian American that demanded respect in a world of Hollywood that lacked it. It was like we still got a sense.
This was a year when Power Rangers was declining, although I find Mortal Kombat's action short, yet effective. Chris Cassamassa, Mortal Kombat suit actor would join WMAC Masters alongside many Power Rangers suit actors' crew.
Oddly enough, first Asian Power Ranger, Thuy Trang would play a villainess in the sequel, Crow: City of Angels, in what some may same is her most memorable performance outside of Power Rangers. Also her only starring role that was accessible to most. She oddly enough died in a car accident prior to 9/11 on a way to a wedding, much like how Eric Draven died celebrating with his wife in the original Crow and how Kali, her character in City of Angels dies, by being thrown off a roof into a car.
Quite honestly, I felt that the Power Rangers fight scenes were more abundant thanks to having them all the time in a television show. The campiness really fit there and you can debate that Power Rangers had a larger more memorable soundtrack.
Not to mention that Martial Arts films in general were becoming popular thanks to influences of the East.
Talisa Soto and Cary Hiroyuki-Nagawa, who portrayed Kitana and Shang Tsung respectively, previously starred in Timothy Dalton's License to Kill. One of Bruce Lee's pet projects was a film between Bond (George Lazenby) and Bruce.

Street Fighter The Movie Casting Choices: Ryu, Ken and Guile

Casting choices:
When I was younger I always thought Ryu was cool, because of the hadokens. When top billing was announced with Jean Claude Van Damme with the Guile, I thought I was wrong.

“May we speak with you please?”
“No

I was an idiot!

Ryu is the original character of original Street Fighter, so you figure he'd be the main character.
The Karate Kid was still a classic for most fans, as well as many fans of underdog martial arts films.
Ryu and Ken's martial arts backstory is downplayed for a lame original black market storyline already done in the Double Dragon movie, opposed to having an homage to John G. Avildsen's Karate Kid movie rivalry with Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence. It's quite a shame since Jean Claude Van Damme played similar characters in Bloodsport, Kickboxer and No Retreat, No Surrender.
Since hair style, accent and country of origin does not matter, why not make Jean Claude Van Damme Ken to possibly Jackie Chan's Ryu having portrayed Street Fighter characters a year earlier in City Hunter? Ryu was a symbol of Asia in the video game world that Hollywood lost with Bruce Lee. Having Jackie Chan or Sonny Chiba in the film could have bridged the gap that Hollywood was missing. And Jean Claude Van Damme as a figure of the Western action movie genre would have complimented that as well.
Jean Claude Van Damme does have a pretty sick flash kick though.
Why didn't they just get Short Round from the Goonies? As well as Corey Feldman to play Ken?

Ugh.

The absolutes of Wreck-It Ralph

Wreck-It-Ralph is a film about division:
The Have and Have Nots.
Good and Evil
Heroes (and glitches) and villains.
The bourgeois and the proletariat.

The Nicelanders live off Wreck-It Ralph's misery as the villain and Fix-it Felix's fame as the hero in a rigged game. I nickname it the Programmer's Joke. Shintoist feelings that everything has a spirit definitely are present in this Toy Story for video games story.
Groupthink and just wanting to fit in is a key theme in this film and maybe even most Pixar films, influenced by the American Dream. Wreck-It Ralph is this film's Buzz Lightyear, becoming his own Neo/Morpheus and decide to take the hero pill instead of the villain pill: he starts his own journey into finding his own path, like that of a Joseph Campbell hero, instead of what his programmer, God, etc told him to do.

To reference the possible coincidences in the film, allow me to list the similarities between the division of class in the film with the real world:
Some worlds have been dubbed homeless after major destruction of a world. Heck, Vanellope and Ralph both live in trash.
The Heroes of Hero's Duty can't fight a war they truly win, constantly stuck in the motions, like us humans, still winning medals along the way.
King Candy runs a backwards dictatorship attempting remove people different than him, fittingly a young girl who is a glitch instead of an old man.

Minor issues I have this is of course, Disney being a contemporary product can't say anything bad about the United States, although I'm assuming it'd be changed in international versions to make money, the rampant product placement that is used for humans, arcades and also video game characters to survive.
President of the United States makes Penelope good?
If you would light the cherry bomb on this theory, this would be a great place to start!

Coen Brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis snubbed in 2013-4 DGA nominations

The nominees for Feature Film were:

  • Alfonso CuarĂ³n – Gravity
  • Paul Greengrass – Captain Phillips
  • Steve McQueen – 12 Years a Slave
  • David O. Russell – American Hustle
  • Martin Scorsese – The Wolf of Wall Street
Captain Phillips is a controversial pick, because of its portrayal of subject matter.
Gravity's use of dialogue didn't work.
American Hustle had great performances but cannot be compared to the auteurish work such as the Coen Bros' Llewyn Davis.
12 Years of Slave was done by an auteur but cannot be compared to a Rob Ager-ish project like Inside Llewyn Davis.

The Wolf of Wall Street was pretty darn good....
