Yakuza Kiwami is a remake of the original Yakuza. Being a big Shenmue fan, the words Shenmue spiritual successor turned up, leading me to this game. The game has gotten praise for its presentation and story, selling a million units.
I'm surprised that this game was even made as even mentioning the yakuza has been frowned upon by certain people such as great Japanese wrestler (Yoshihiro) Tajiri, when WWE suggested him to name a stable he created off a group like this.
That being said though, SEGA's safe, albeit that's debatable since their downfall as a console giant, how does it fare vs Shenmue?
Yakuza has a better story. Shenmue is a detective story with action hero tropes, and immerses you a lot better having you look and touch objects, buy stuff in a store, feed a cat, etc..
In Yakuza, people always try and mug you or scam you. Stuff like this can get you banned from China for looking down upon its society. And you have to beat deal with Yakuza gang member politics.
I also don't know the appeal of this game in Japan, where this stuff probably actually happened, whereas with the US, there's probably a Jiang Wen film sorta appeal to it.
Again though, the gameplay of Yakuza is really poor compared to Shenmue. You can't touch objects. There's a lot of stuff you can't do. The original game that I owned on the PS2 takes forever before you can get into the interesting and immersive side missions. Most of the missions are just gameplay. And the gameplay is not that deep, where it's the absolute opposite of what I want to do in Smash Bros and Shenmue learning how to use items only.
Smash Bros is a game where I prefer the use of the fighting moves that players can learn. Same with Shenmue (and you can't really use objects anyway.) The fighting system is not like Shenmue or even the story flawed Sleeping Dogs regretably. Just grab a friggin Bicycle then own people. It's very stilted, junky, and not really polished. I recall having problems with my cousin's Japanese Yakuza game as well.
Also, it's weird playing a crime game never being able to use a gun. Not having a Aliens; Colonial Marines is one thing, but how about a Valkyria Chronicles. It's sort a game logic thatn a real one.
The puzzle to get into the funeral was a bit interesting, albeit I couldn't figure out how to get through it for a while.
Oh well, this is a perfect time for SEGA to profit off Shenmue though, so why not? Trailers comparing the two games would definitely make them a lot of money.
